Defense Minister Gives Lebanon Conflict a Biblical Name

"The War Within the Straits"

Jerusalem:

Israel's Defense Minister Amir Peretz has named this conflict "Milhemet Bein Hemeitzarim," Hebrew for the "War within the Straits," or the "dire straits war." This is because Israel is now in the period called Bein Hemeitzarim which began on the 17th of Tamuz (Hebrew calendar) and ends on the 9th of Av. The 9th of Av is one of the official days of mourning in Hebrew tradition.

Historically, this 3-week period marks the Babylonian captivity of Israel, and the Roman victory 600 years later. Both conquests took place on the ninth of Av. Centuries later, the Catholic Church issued its Spanish Inquisition expulsion decree on -- you guessed it -- the 9th of Av.

In Judaism's tradition, this passage from Lamentations is read in the evening on the 9th of Av:

"Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude: she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest: all her persecutors overtook her between the straits." - Lam 1:3

This year (2006), the 17th of Tamuz fell on July 13. 9th of Av falls on August 3. Please pray as the LORD leads you -- and as the Bible commands:

"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee." -Psa 122:6
